Getting around
The old town is compact and walkable on both sides of the Salzach river. A funicular climbs to the fortress, and trolleybuses and buses cover the rest of the city, including the airport. Trains connect Salzburg with Vienna and Munich, and regional buses serve the lake district.
What to skip
Hallstatt gets extremely crowded with day-trippers; arrive early or late in the day, or visit quieter lakeside villages in the Salzkammergut instead. The Getreidegasse shopping street is packed at midday, so walk it early in the morning or in the evening.
