Burma travel advisory today

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Myanmar’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Myanmar set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Myanmar Embassy in the UK.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Myanmar, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the day you arrive.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. See Dual citizenship.

Myanmar-British dual nationals

Myanmar does not recognise dual nationality. If you hold dual nationality, Myanmar authorities may treat you as a Myanmar citizen. This limits the consular assistance the UK government may be able to provide. If you are arrested or detained as a dual national, Myanmar authorities may refuse UK consular staff permission to visit or assist you.

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to enter Myanmar. If you must apply for and receive your visa before travelling. You cannot obtain a visa on arrival.

Applying for a visa

You can apply for a tourist e-visa online.

To apply for a business e-visa you need to be sponsored by a registered Myanmar company or a registered Chamber of Commerce association. Submit the proof of the invitation with your visa application in the form of a letter personally addressed to you, along with a copy of the company’s registration certificate. The letter must state the purpose and timeframe of your visit.

Non-governmental organisations are not eligible to sponsor visas.

If you overstay your visa, you will be liable to pay a fine and could face detention.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Myanmar, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Myanmar. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into Myanmar

Myanmar is largely a cash-based society. Expect to rely on cash for most of your stay. There is significant disruption to banking services. Many ATMs do not accept UK or international bank cards and some banks have limits on daily withdrawals. Electronic payments and transfers are mostly working, but many commercial outlets will only accept cash. Visa is more widely accepted than Mastercard.

If you plan to bring more than 10,000 US dollars-worth of any foreign currency, you must declare this to customs on arrival or risk imprisonment.

If you have to pay a visa overstay fine or pay for excess baggage on departure, you will need to pay in US dollars.

Once you’re in Myanmar it is possible to change US dollars into Kyat, including at banks. However, some money exchanges have closed due to pressure from the authorities. Check your US dollars are in good condition, with no pen marks, folds or tears. Exchange counters prefer high-denomination bills and they typically inspect all notes carefully.

Due to concerns over counterfeit money, exchange counters may refuse dollars with the letters AB and CB at the start of the serial number (top left-hand corner of the note).

If you want to pay for hotels or restaurants with a credit or debit card, phone ahead to check this will be possible.

You cannot import gold or gold bullion into Myanmar for trading and risk arrest for doing so. On arrival, you must declare any valuable articles including gold, gems and jewellery with customs.

Some countries have imposed measures in response to the Ebola disease outbreak. These can include restrictions on entry and health screening measures for travellers having recently visited an affected country. If you are suspected of having symptoms, you may be subject to isolation, quarantine and/or travel restrictions. Contact the authorities of the country you are travelling to for more details.

The authorities of a country or territory decide who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

Passport

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you're travelling with.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country's entry rules.

Regular Canadian passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave from Myanmar.

Official travel

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

You should also be aware that current systems used by some countries and travel companies may not recognize the “X” gender identifier. You may still be asked to provide your sex/gender information as either male or female when travelling.

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

Visas

Tourist visa: required
Business visa: required

A visa is required for tourism and business purposes and is valid for 28 days. It should be obtained prior to travel at a Myanmar diplomatic mission. Both eVisas and multiple-entry business visas are available. Visitors must produce proof of hotel accommodation on arrival. Staying with friends or colleagues is not a valid option for entry into the country.

The Myanmar government has created a visa-on-arrival program to allow select business travellers, including Canadians, to obtain a business visa upon arrival at the Yangon International Airport. Travellers are encouraged not to rely on this option, however, as the program’s requirements and eligibility criteria remain unclear. It is strongly recommended that all travellers, including business travellers, carefully verify visa requirements and options with the nearest Embassy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar before travelling.

Foreign journalists have had difficulty obtaining visas, and some have been denied entry upon arrival despite having received a visa. In the past, journalists, and tourists mistaken for journalists, have been denied entry when travelling on tourist visas, have been harassed and have had film and notes confiscated upon leaving the country.

Travel to parts of Myanmar is strictly controlled by government authorities. Foreigners have been deported and detained for visa offences.

Port of entry

You should use the same port of entry (e.g. Yangon International Airport) to enter and exit Myanmar to avoid problems with immigration services.

Border crossings

We strongly advise against all travel to Myanmar, including through its land borders, due to the ongoing conflict. You could be caught in violent clashes.

If you decide to travel, know that land border crossing hours of operation are unpredictable and could leave you stranded on either side of the border. Border crossings may close with little or no notice, and entry may be restricted to the nationals of the bordering states and/or to the immediate area or border town.

Some government-authorized tour companies may be able to secure the appropriate permission from the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism to cross these borders in advance, through a process separate from the required visa application.
