Dominican Republic travel advisory today

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the Dominican Republic’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in the Dominican Republic set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the UK.

Passport validity requirements

Up until 31 December 2026, British passport holders can enter and leave the Dominican Republic for tourism purposes, as long as their passport remains valid for the duration of their visit. Rules may change after this date. Check the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism website for the latest information.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Checks at border control

You may be refused entry if you do not have proof of onward or return travel when you arrive in the country.

Border officials will take your fingerprints and take a photograph of you before allowing you into the country.

Entry and exit form

You must fill in an entry and exit form before arriving in and leaving the Dominican Republic. This form includes your:

• customs declaration
• international boarding and disembarking form

You can fill in the form up to 7 days before you arrive in the country. You’ll get a QR code, which you may be asked to show at check-in, or when you arrive in or leave the country.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. See Dual citizenship.

Visa requirements

You can visit the Dominican Republic for tourism without a visa for 30 days.

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Dominican Republic government’s entry requirements.

Extending your visit

You can pay to extend your visit up to 120 days by contacting the Dominican Republic Immigration Service.

Vaccine requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Dominican Republic guide.

Depending on your circumstances, this may include a yellow fever certificate.

Children and young people

For children aged 17 and under travelling alone, parents should check travel requirements with the airline and with Dominican Republic Immigration Service.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of the Dominican Republic (in Spanish). You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Some countries have imposed measures in response to the Ebola disease outbreak. These can include restrictions on entry and health screening measures for travellers having recently visited an affected country. If you are suspected of having symptoms, you may be subject to isolation, quarantine and/or travel restrictions. Contact the authorities of the country you are travelling to for more details.

The authorities of a country or territory decide who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

Passport

Until December 31, 2026, Canadians can enter the Dominican Republic for tourism purposes with a passport valid for the duration of their stay.

If you are travelling for other purposes, you are required to have a passport valid for a minimum of 6 months after the date of arrival in the Dominican Republic.

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you're travelling with.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country's entry rules.

Regular Canadian passport

Your passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months after the date of your arrival in the Dominican Republic.

Official travel

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

You should also be aware that current systems used by some countries and travel companies may not recognize the “X” gender identifier. You may still be asked to provide your sex/gender information as either male or female when travelling.

Other travel documents

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

Other entry requirements

When you enter the Dominican Republic, you may need to be able to prove adequate funds for the duration of your stay. You will also need to provide the address where you will be staying during your travel.

Customs officials may ask you to show them a return or onward ticket.

E-Ticket

You must complete an electronic form, or E-ticket, to enter and exit the country. You will need a new E-ticket every time you travel to the Dominican Republic. You must complete this form before boarding your flight to the Dominican Republic. You can present a digital or printed copy of your E-ticket code to customs officials at the airport.

This electronic form doesn’t replace the Tourist card.

Tourist card

If you enter the Dominican Republic by air, the cost of the tourist card is included in your airline ticket. If you enter the Dominican Republic by sea, you can obtain the card from the General Directorate of Internal Taxes at your point of entry.

Extension and overstay

You can apply for a stay extension for a period of up to 120 days. You must request to extend your stay at the Dominican Directorate General for Migration, in Santo Domingo, after you arrive in the Dominican Republic and before your tourist card expires.

If you overstay the duration of your tourist card or your extension, you could be deported or refused re-entry.

Drug screening

You may be subjected to drug screening when you leave the country. Authorities may search your luggage and ask you to sign a form, in Spanish, stating that the search was performed within procedural requirements.

In some cases, they may ask you to undergo an X-ray.
