Honduras travel advisory today

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Honduras current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Honduras set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Honduran Embassy in the UK (Spanish language website).

Passport validity requirements

To enter Honduras, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and at least 2 blank pages. Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. See Dual citizenship.

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to visit Honduras.

However, passengers of cruise ships are permitted to enter Honduras under a “short pass”. This allows passengers to disembark during the hours the ship is docked in Honduras (usually less than a day). If passengers remain in Honduras beyond the hours of docking a visa will be required. Check with your cruise line or with your nearest Honduran Embassy for further information.

Applying for a visa

If you are not in the UK, contact the nearest Honduras Embassy for information and instructions about how to apply for a visa. You can also contact the National Institute of Migration (Spanish language website).

To work, study or for business travel, you must meet the Honduran government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Honduran Embassy (Spanish language website).

If you overstay, you may get a fine that you must pay before you leave Honduras. For information on how to extend your stay or pay a fine, contact the National Institute of Migration (Spanish language website).

Make sure you get your passport stamped.

You will get a 30-day visit entry stamp in your passport when you arrive. Make sure the border control officer puts a stamp in your passport otherwise you may get a fine. If your passport is missing a stamp, return to the immigration desk immediately, or go to the National Institute of Migration in Tegucigalpa as soon as possible.

You can apply at an immigration office to extend your stay.

Travelling through Honduras

If you’re travelling through Honduras to another country (sometimes called ‘transiting’), you must follow Honduran entry requirements even if you do not pass through immigration. Contact the National Institute of Migration (Spanish language website) for information.

Travelling between Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua

You can travel between Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador for up to 90 days without a visa. The CA-4 Agreement also includes Honduras, however British Nationals must have a visa to visit Honduras. If you’re entering Honduras, read the entry requirements. Read the travel advice for:

• El Salvador
• Guatemala
• Nicaragua

The 90-day period starts when you enter any of these countries and does not restart when you cross borders. You’ll have to go through immigration checks at borders. If you’re expelled from one of these countries, you’re also excluded from the other 3.

If you wish to extend your stay, contact the National Institute of Migration (Spanish language website) in Honduras. If you overstay, you may get a fine.

Travellers aged 20 and under

To enter or exit Honduras, people aged 20 and under travelling alone or with only one parent or legal guardian must have a notarised letter in Spanish from the parents or guardians not travelling with them. Contact the Honduran Embassy (Spanish language website), or if you’re in Honduras the nearest National Institute of Migration (Spanish language website), for information about what documents you need. Single parents will need additional documents.

Airport tax

There is an airport departure tax for international flights ranging from USD40 - USD55 (or the same amount in Honduran lempiras) depending on the airport. This is normally included in the cost of your ticket.

There is also a lower rate departure tax for domestic flights, again, normally included in the cost of your ticket.

Land border fee

When you arrive at a land border, the immigration authorities may charge you a fee of 3 US dollars (in cash). Keep the receipt until you leave Honduras as you may be asked to present it and make sure you get a stamp in your passport.

Vaccine requirements

You may need a yellow fever certificate for onward travel to some other countries, due to the risk of yellow fever in Honduras.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Honduras. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

You must complete the Government of Honduras’ customs declaration form prior to entering or leaving the country. After completing the online form, you must present the QR code to the customs authorities, either on paper or electronically.

Some countries have imposed measures in response to the Ebola disease outbreak. These can include restrictions on entry and health screening measures for travellers having recently visited an affected country. If you are suspected of having symptoms, you may be subject to isolation, quarantine and/or travel restrictions. Contact the authorities of the country you are travelling to for more details.

The authorities of a country or territory decide who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you're travelling with.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country's entry rules.

Your passport must be valid at least 6 months from the date of entry.

Official travel

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

You should also be aware that current systems used by some countries and travel companies may not recognize the “X” gender identifier. You may still be asked to provide your sex/gender information as either male or female when travelling.

Other travel documents

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

If you intend to study in Honduras, you must obtain a student permit, which you can get from the immigration authorities once you arrive in the country.

Entry stamp

Immigration authorities will stamp your passport upon arrival and write down the number of days you are allowed in the country. The 90-day period is not guaranteed, and the decision is at their discretion.

• Make sure your passport is stamped upon arrival
• Take good note of your total authorized stay

Central America-4 Border Control Agreement (CA-4)

Under the terms of the Central America-4 Border Control Agreement (CA-4), Canadian tourists may travel freely within any of the following CA-4 countries:

• El Salvador
• Guatemala
• Honduras
• Nicaragua

You can travel between these countries for up to 90 days without having to undergo entry and exit formalities at border immigration checkpoints. However, 90 days are not automatically granted. The immigration officer at your first entry point into the CA-4 region will determine the exact length of your authorized stay.

You must still check in at immigration counters when you enter or exit these checkpoints.

Make sure you receive an entry or exit stamp in your passport each time you cross a checkpoint to avoid fines and problems with immigration authorities.

You may request an extension of up to 30 days. However, you must request this extension and pay the required fee at the National Migration Institute before your first authorized stay expires. Immigration authorities will determine the exact length of the extension.

You are authorized to stay in Honduras for a maximum of 120 days. Therefore, if you receive an extension in another CA-4 country that leads to a total authorized stay of less than 120 days, you may request another extension of up to 30 days in Honduras, as long as it does not exceed 120 days. Likewise, if you receive an extension in another CA-4 country that leads to a total authorized stay of more than 120 days, Honduras will only recognize the first 120 days.

Once your total authorized stay expires, you must either:

• change your migratory status
• leave the CA-4 region
• travel to El Salvador, where you may be granted a stay of up to 180 days

If you fail to do so, you will be fined and given 5 days to leave.

Once you leave the CA-4 region, you may attempt to return and restart the process without delay. However, the immigration officer could deny your re-entry.

If you get a new Canadian passport in Honduras, you do not need to obtain a new entry stamp from immigration authorities to exit the country, since your information is saved digitally upon arrival. However, you could encounter issues when travelling within the CA-4 region if you do not have proof of your entry stamp. To avoid problems, you should obtain a new entry stamp from immigration authorities before exiting the country and travelling within the CA-4 region.

Each CA-4 country interprets and enforces the agreement differently. Ensure you carefully read the Travel Advice and Advisories for each destination you plan on visiting before travelling.

Entering by land

If you plan to enter by land, you need to pay 3 USD or the equivalent in lempiras.

Stay extension

You can apply for a stay extension of up to 30 days, at the discretion of the immigration authorities. You must request this extension and pay the required fee at the National Migration Institute before your first authorized stay expires.

Other entry requirements

Customs officials may ask you to show them:

• a return or onward ticket
• proof that you have sufficient funds for the duration of your stay

Children and travel

The age of majority in Honduras is 21. The country has strict requirements for the entry and exit of minors.

A minor must show a written and notarized authorization to travel:

• signed by both parents if travelling alone
• signed by the non-travelling parent if travelling with one parent only

The written authorization must be in Spanish and authenticated by the Honduran authorities prior to arrival.

This is also enforced if the minor has a residential or citizenship tie to Honduras inherited from one of the parents, even if the tie has not been legally registered.
