Indonesia travel advisory today

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Indonesia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Indonesian Embassy in the UK.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Indonesia, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and have at least 2 blank pages.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. See Dual citizenship.

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to visit Indonesia.

You can get a 30-day visa on arrival (VOA) for:

• tourism
• visiting family or friends
• some business activities and official meetings
• buying goods
• official government visits

The VOA is not suitable for all business activities, volunteering, influencer work, or creating commercial online content. If you plan to create sponsored social media content, work as an influencer, or produce online content for commercial purposes while in Indonesia, you may need a different type of visa.

The VOA costs 500,000 Indonesian rupiah and can be paid by cash or card. It is valid for single entry only.

To get a VOA, your passport must meet Indonesia’s entry requirements, and you must have proof of your onward or return journey. Most of the main airports and seaports issue VOAs.

You can also apply online for a visa before you travel using the Indonesian immigration website. Apply at least one week before you leave. You can choose from several visa options, including multiple-entry visas and 60-day visas.

Make sure your visa is approved before you arrive in Indonesia. If it is not approved before you travel, you may only be able to get a 30-day VOA. A visa approved after you enter Indonesia is not valid and you could face penalties for overstaying.

All Indonesia Declaration Form

Before travelling to Indonesia, fill out the online customs and health declaration on the All Indonesia arrival card website or app within 72 hours of arrival. The All Indonesia arrival card is a service free of charge and travellers should avoid accessing alternative websites or email links that request payment for this service.

After completing the form, you can also use the All Indonesia app to apply for a visa.

Extending your visa or residence permit

The 30-day visa can be extended once, for another 30 days, at any immigration office within Indonesia. If you applied online, you can get the extension on the Indonesian immigration website.

Make sure you extend your visa within the initial 30 days to avoid an overstay fine of 1 million rupiah a day.

KITAS extension (stay or work permit)

If you’re a KITAS holder with an expired stay permit, you can apply for an extension from outside Indonesia through a sponsor. The sponsor must submit the application to the immigration office attaching a copy of your passport and proof of your departure from Indonesia. The application is submitted without biometric sampling. The sponsor must report your arrival within 30 days.

Visa scams

Beware of visa scams by fake visa agents who, having taken your money, may fail to provide a visa or supply the wrong visa. This could result in you overstaying and getting a fine of 1 million rupiah a day, plus possible deportation and a re-entry ban. Use the Indonesian immigration website to get or extend your visa.

Visa scams are increasing in Indonesia. Some travellers have lost significant amounts of money. Others have been deported despite paying a large fee to an agent to get the correct visa or extension.

Travellers are advised to use only the official government links provided via the FCDO travel advice to reduce the risk of engaging with fraudulent services.

Not following visa conditions

Using the wrong type of visa, or staying in Indonesia after your visa expires, is taken very seriously. It can lead to prosecution, detention and deportation at your own cost. The cost of overstaying your visa is one million rupiah a day.

If your visa will expire while you are in hospital or in detention, contact Indonesian Immigration before it expires to avoid any overstay fines.

Registering with the police

If you stay in private accommodation in Indonesia, you must register your presence with the local police at the nearest police station. You could be fined 5 million Indonesian rupiah if you do not register. If you’re staying in a hotel, you will be registered automatically.

Bali tourist levy

The Bali provincial government has introduced a tourist levy of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah (approximately £8) for all foreign tourists arriving in Bali. You can pay online or on arrival. See the Bali provincial government website for more details.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Indonesia, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk.

Departure tax

Airport tax is included in the cost of all domestic flights within Indonesia. For some international flights departing Indonesia, airport departure tax might not be included in the price of the ticket. Check with your airline or travel agent before you travel.

Some countries have imposed measures in response to the Ebola disease outbreak. These can include restrictions on entry and health screening measures for travellers having recently visited an affected country. If you are suspected of having symptoms, you may be subject to isolation, quarantine and/or travel restrictions. Contact the authorities of the country you are travelling to for more details.

The authorities of a country or territory decide who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

Passport

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you're travelling with.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country's entry rules.

Regular Canadian passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry into Indonesia and must contain at least one blank page for the placement of the Indonesian visa or entry stamp.

Official travel

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

You should also be aware that current systems used by some countries and travel companies may not recognize the “X” gender identifier. You may still be asked to provide your sex/gender information as either male or female when travelling.

Other travel documents

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

Indonesia strictly enforces its immigration and visa requirements. Foreign travellers have been detained in immigration detention centres for visa violations or overstays. Those in violation may be subject to substantial fines and deportation.

A round-trip or onward airline ticket is required to obtain all types of visas.

There is an increase in visa scams in Indonesia, including in Bali.

• Do not accept unsolicited offers for visa extensions, as you could be at risk of:
• overstaying your visa
• legal consequences such as fines, deportation or re-entry bans
• Never hand over your passport to individuals or agencies claiming to offer visa services
• Use official government channels to manage or renew visas and ensure your information and documents remain secure

Tourist visa

If you are travelling for tourism with a regular Canadian passport, you may obtain a visa in advance or on arrival at select points of entry.

Business and social-cultural visas

If you are travelling to Indonesia for business or social-cultural purposes (e.g. volunteer work), you must obtain a visa prior to your arrival. You must provide a letter from both the sponsoring organization in Indonesia and the sending organization in Canada to obtain your visa.

A business or social-cultural single-entry visa is extendable from within Indonesia.

Seamless Corridor Registration

Indonesian airports are introducing “Seamless Corridors” to speed up immigration clearance. This service requires your biometric data as well as your passport and flight information. Once you’re enrolled, you can use the designated lanes without presenting your passport or boarding pass.

Aid workers

Aid workers must have a sponsor in Indonesia to obtain a visa. Those going to Aceh also require prior authorization from the Directorate General of Immigration in Aceh or Jakarta.

Journalists

Journalists visiting Indonesia for reporting and filming purposes must obtain authorization from the Directorate General of Immigration in Jakarta before applying for a visa.

Love Bali Tourist Levy

Tourists entering Bali are subject to the Love Bali Tourist Levy. This fee is in addition to the visa fees paid to enter Indonesia.

All Indonesia Declaration Form

The All Indonesia Declaration Form is mandatory and you must complete it before you check in for your flight, up to 72 hours before you arrive in Indonesia.

After submitting the All Indonesia Declaration Form, you will receive a QR code by email or on-screen, which you must save and show to immigration and customs officials on arrival.

Customs officials may ask you to show them a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay.
