Mauritius travel advisory today

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Mauritius’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Mauritius set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Mauritius High Commission in the UK.

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must:

• be valid for the duration of your stay
• have one blank page

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. See Dual citizenship.

Visa requirements

You can visit Mauritius without a visa for up to 60 days. When you arrive, a border official will stamp your passport to show the end-date for your permitted stay.

You must be able to show proof of onward or return travel.

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Mauritian government’s entry requirements.

Digital travel form

You must fill in the Mauritius All in One travel form online before you arrive. Print out a copy of your completed form with a QR code on it. You’ll need to show the form to officials when you arrive at the airport. If you do not fill in the form before you arrive, you’ll be asked to fill in an immigration disembarkation card at the airport.

Travelling from Reunion Island to Mauritius

On arrival in Mauritius, you may be asked questions about your health and recent travel history.

Health screening

If you travel to Mauritius from a country where malaria is common, border officials may ask you for a blood sample to meet Ministry of Health requirements. If you are not tested at the airport, officials may contact you later during your visit.

Ebola

As a precautionary measure, Mauritius has introduced entry restrictions in response to the Ebola outbreak:

• Non-Mauritian nationals that have travelled from Democratic Republic of Congo or South Sudan within the preceding 21 days and that do not hold a valid work permit, residence permit, occupation permit, business, or student visa are not allowed to enter Mauritius
• Mauritian nationals, and non-Mauritians holding a valid work permit, residence permit, occupation permit, business visa or student visa who have travelled from, transited through, or been present in Democratic Republic of Congo or South Sudan within the preceding 21 days will be permitted entry but will be subject to a 21-day mandatory quarantine

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Mauritius. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Some countries have imposed measures in response to the Ebola disease outbreak. These can include restrictions on entry and health screening measures for travellers having recently visited an affected country. If you are suspected of having symptoms, you may be subject to isolation, quarantine and/or travel restrictions. Contact the authorities of the country you are travelling to for more details.

The authorities of a country or territory decide who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

Passport

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you're travelling with.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country's entry rules.

Regular Canadian passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Mauritius and must contain at least one blank page.

Official travel

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

You should also be aware that current systems used by some countries and travel companies may not recognize the “X” gender identifier. You may still be asked to provide your sex/gender information as either male or female when travelling.

Other travel documents

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

Visas

Tourist visa: not required for stays of less than 60 days, with possible extensions
Premium tourist visa: valid for 6 months, required prior to arrival
Student visa: required
Work permit: required, maximum 120 days per year

A letter of authorization from the inviting organization is required for persons travelling to Mauritius on business.

Health screening

Due to the ongoing outbreak of Ebola virus disease in neighbouring countries you may be subject to a quick thermal scanner screening and/or a health questionnaire at the airports upon boarding or disembarking a plane.
