Montserrat travel advisory today

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Montserrat’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

Travel to and from Montserrat is by air either through Antigua or St Maarten. There is currently no ferry service.

If you are travelling to Montserrat, you must meet the entry requirements of the relevant third country. Check the travel advice for Antigua or travel advice for St Maarten.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Montserrat, your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You can visit Montserrat without a visa for up to 180 days.

You need a work permit to work in Montserrat.

Online Immigration and Customs Form

To avoid delays at immigration upon arrival in Montserrat, travellers are required to complete the online Immigration and Customs Form -Montserrat - Online Immigration & Customs Portal which is available 72 hours prior to travel. This form must be saved or printed and presented to Immigration and Customs Officials upon arrival.

Embarkation tax

When you leave Montserrat you must pay an embarkation tax of 45 East Caribbean dollars (25 East Caribbean dollars if you are a resident). The tax is usually included in the flight cost – check with your airline.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Montserrat, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Montserrat. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Certain marine and animal specimens may not be taken from the island. Check with the local customs authorities before you buy such items and declare them when you leave.

Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory.

Some countries have imposed measures in response to the Ebola disease outbreak. These can include restrictions on entry and health screening measures for travellers having recently visited an affected country. If you are suspected of having symptoms, you may be subject to isolation, quarantine and/or travel restrictions. Contact the authorities of the country you are travelling to for more details.

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

You should also be aware that current systems used by some countries and travel companies may not recognize the “X” gender identifier. You may still be asked to provide your sex/gender information as either male or female when travelling.

Online Immigration and Customs form

You must complete the online Immigration and Customs form, available 72 hours before you arrive in Montserrat. You will then receive a receipt via email, which you must present to Immigration and Customs officials upon arrival.
