Morocco travel advisory today

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Morocco’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Morocco set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Moroccan Consulate General in the UK.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Morocco, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the date you arrive.

Make sure your passport is not damaged. The Moroccan authorities have denied entry to some travellers with damaged passports. Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Lost or stolen passports

If your passport is lost or stolen, you will need to apply for an emergency travel document from the British embassy. You will also need to show a police report to be able to leave the country. The police will issue a written report, this can be a “déclaration de perte” for a lost passport or a “déclaration de vol” for a stolen passport. Stolen or lost passports must be reported in the city where the theft or loss occurred.

Border officials should stamp your passport when you enter Morocco. Some travellers have had difficulties leaving Morocco because their passport did not have an entry stamp.

Sending passports by post

It is illegal to send passports by post to or through Morocco. The authorities will confiscate British passports sent to or through Morocco by post or courier.

Carrying unaccompanied passports

Carrying another person’s passport may attract scrutiny from Police, Immigration, Customs, or Border Officials. Travellers are strongly advised not to carry a passport belonging to an individual who is not accompanying them unless there is a clear and legitimate reason for doing so.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. See Dual citizenship.

Visa requirements

You can visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism.

To stay longer than 90 days, you must request an extension at a Moroccan police station.

If you’re going to Morocco for reasons other than tourism, check visa requirements with the Moroccan Consulate General in the UK.

Arriving by private boat

If you arrive by private boat, you must enter at a recognised port of entry. It is illegal to enter through other ports.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Morocco, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a polio vaccine if you’re coming from a polio-affected country.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Morocco. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into or out of Morocco

The Moroccan dirham is a closed ‘non-convertible’ currency. This means it cannot be easily exchanged outside Morocco for other currencies .

You must declare foreign currency worth 100,000 Moroccan dirham or more (equal to around £8,000) when you enter or leave the country.

Passing fraudulent banknotes carries significant prison sentences. Defacing Moroccan banknotes is also illegal and punishable by imprisonment.

Some countries have imposed measures in response to the Ebola disease outbreak. These can include restrictions on entry and health screening measures for travellers having recently visited an affected country. If you are suspected of having symptoms, you may be subject to isolation, quarantine and/or travel restrictions. Contact the authorities of the country you are travelling to for more details.

The authorities of a country or territory decide who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

Passport

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you're travelling with.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country's entry rules.

Regular Canadian passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Morocco.

Official travel

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

You should also be aware that current systems used by some countries and travel companies may not recognize the “X” gender identifier. You may still be asked to provide your sex/gender information as either male or female when travelling.

Other travel documents

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

Visas

Tourist visa: not required for stays of less than 90 days
Business visa: not required for stays of less than 90 days
Student visa: not required for stays of less than 90 days

Extending your stay beyond 90 days

You must secure proper authorization if you plan to extend your stay in Morocco beyond 90 days. Contact the Service to Foreigners Section (Section du service aux étrangers) at the local police station at least 15 days prior to the expiry of the 90-day limit.

If you remain in Morocco beyond the 90-day limit, you’ll be forced to remain there until seen by a prosecutor and fined.

Entering by private boat

To enter Morocco by private boat, you must do so at a recognized port of entry.

Entering with a private vehicle

If you enter Morocco with a vehicle, you must exit with it or you will be denied exit.
