Entry requirements for United States

🇬🇧 British passport holders

  • Visa: To enter or transit through the US, you must have either an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation ( ESTA ) or a visa .
  • Passport: To enter the US, your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay.
Read the full UK entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

You must have the correct approval prior to travel. This will be either a valid US visa or Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA), depending on your personal circumstances and purpose of travel.

US authorities enforce entry rules strictly. If you do not have the correct immigration status, or if you breach the terms of your entry, there is a risk you may be detained, refused entry, or removed (deported). Overstaying your permitted time in the US can also lead to detention and future bans on re-entry.

A valid ESTA or visa does not guarantee you will be allowed to enter the US. Authorities may refuse you entry if, for example, they believe you plan to stay longer than permitted or have provided inaccurate or incomplete information. The US may change the conditions to travel to the US at any time without prior notice.

If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the US Embassy or a consulate in the UK. See information from US Customs and Border Protection on entry for international visitors.

Passport validity requirements

To enter the US, your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay.

If you’re travelling through another country on your way to or from the US, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. See Dual citizenship.

British-US dual nationals

US law requires US citizens to enter and exit the US using a US passport. Contact the US Embassy or a consulate in the UK for more information.

Visa requirements

To enter or transit through the US, you must have either an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) or a visa.

The US State Department has more information on visas.

Travellers whose sex on their passport differs from their sex recorded at birth should contact the US Embassy or a consulate in the UK for further advice.

Applying for an ESTA

ESTA is an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the US under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). You can apply for an ESTA via the Official ESTA Application Website or using the ESTA Mobile app on android or on iOS.

All Visa Waiver Program (VWP) travellers intending to enter the US by land, sea and air will be required to obtain an approved ESTA prior to application for admission at land border ports of entry. Individuals who are not eligible to travel under the VWP may apply for a visa at any U.S. Embassy & Consulates.

You may not be able to apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you have:

  • been arrested (even if the arrest did not result in a criminal conviction)
  • a criminal record
  • been refused admission into, or have been deported from, the US
  • previously overstayed under an ESTA visa waiver

Information on whether you are eligible for an ESTA visa waiver can be found in the help section of the official ESTA Application Website.

You cannot normally apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you were in the following countries on or after March 2011:

  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Libya
  • North Korea
  • Somalia
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Yemen

You cannot apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you travelled to or were in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021.

If your ESTA does not contain the required selfie photograph now required by US Customs and Border Protection, you may need to apply for a new ESTA. You should check your ESTA account before travelling to ensure your authorisation remains valid.

An ESTA may not be sufficient for all types of business travel – particularly if you are travelling on behalf of a US company. Please check the rules on the ESTA website carefully.

If you are not eligible for an ESTA, you must instead apply for a US visa. Travelling on an ESTA when ineligible can lead to detention and deportation by the US authorities.

Applying for a visa

The US Embassy in London has information on how to apply for a visa. Please check the guidance carefully.

US visa appointments

Visa appointments at the US Embassy in London are limited. Plan your application as far ahead as possible before travel. If you need to travel urgently, you can request an expedited interview through the US Embassy’s appointment service provider.

The US Embassy has more information on visa appointments.

Children and young people

Anyone aged 17 and under must:

  • have a valid visa or ESTA on arrival
  • be able to provide evidence about the purpose, location and length of their visit if asked by immigration officials
  • have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarised from one or both parents if travelling alone, with only one parent, or with someone who is not a parent or legal guardian

The US authorities can stop you entering the country if they have safeguarding concerns about a child. If this happens, the US authorities will take the child into their care, and their return from the US could take months. The FCDO cannot speed up the return of British nationals aged 17 and under from the US.

The US government has information about children travelling to the US. If you have questions, contact the US Embassy in the UK.

Vaccine requirements

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s US guide.

Ebola

As a public health measure, the United States has introduced temporary entry restrictions for travellers who were recently in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan. See Information for travellers returning from Ebola-affected areas. Consult your airline before travelling.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared this a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Electronic devices

Officials may ask to inspect your electronic devices, emails, text messages, and social media activity. If you refuse, they can delay or deny your entry. US Customs and Border Protection has more information on electronic device searches.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of the US. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Global Entry

The US Customs and Border Protection Trusted Traveller Program (TTP) Global Entry allows pre-approved, low-risk travellers expedited clearance at some US airports. If you’re a British citizen, you can register to get a UK background check. If you pass the background checks, you’ll be invited to apply for Global Entry for UK Citizens. Check eligibility carefully.

🇨🇦 Canadian passport holders

Read the full Canadian entry requirements

Some countries have imposed measures in response to the Ebola disease outbreak. These can include restrictions on entry and health screening measures for travellers having recently visited an affected country. If you are suspected of having symptoms, you may be subject to isolation, quarantine and/or travel restrictions. Contact the authorities of the country you are travelling to for more details.

Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders and the Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet entry or exit requirements for the United States.

Individual border agents often have significant discretion in making those determinations. U.S. authorities strictly enforce entry requirements. Expect scrutiny at ports of entry, including of electronic devices. Comply and be forthcoming in all interactions with border authorities. If you are denied entry, you could be detained while awaiting deportation.

We have obtained the information on this page from the U.S. authorities. It can, however, change at any time.

Verify this information with the Foreign Representatives in Canada.

Passport

You must provide proof of your Canadian citizenship upon entry to the U.S. There are several documents that can satisfy this requirement.

Travel by air

Canadian citizens travelling by air to the United States must present one of the following documents:

  • a passport, which must be valid for the duration of their stay
  • a valid NEXUS card, used at self-serve kiosks at designated airports

This requirement applies to all Canadian citizens, including children, travelling by air to or even just transiting through the United States.

Useful links
Travel by land or water

As per the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), Canadian citizens aged 16 years and older must present one of the following documents when entering the United States by land or water:

  • a valid passport
  • a Trusted Traveler Program card

The WHTI-compliant document you choose to use must be valid for the duration of your stay.

Canadian citizens aged 15 years and under entering the United States by land or water require one of the following documents:

  • a passport
  • an original or a copy of a birth certificate
  • an original Canadian citizenship certificate
Useful links
Passport for official travel

Different entry rules may apply.

Official travel

Passport with "X" gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

You should also be aware that current systems used by some countries and travel companies may not recognize the “X” gender identifier. You may still be asked to provide your sex/gender information as either male or female when travelling.

Other travel documents

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, check with the closest diplomatic mission for your destination.

Registration

Canadians and other foreign nationals visiting the United States for periods longer than 30 days must be registered with the United States Government. Failure to comply with the registration requirement could result in penalties, fines, and misdemeanor prosecution. You should consult the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website to determine if you need to register with USCIS and how to do so. You can verify if you have been automatically registered on entry to the U.S. by looking up your I-94 admission form on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) website.

Useful links

Additional information at borders

Customs officials may ask you to provide your address while in the United States (including Puerto Rico). Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers may also ask for:

  • evidence of residential, employment or educational ties to Canada
  • proof that the trip is for a legitimate purpose and is of a reasonable length
  • proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay

Dual citizens

Dual Canadian-American citizenship

U.S. law requires dual citizens to enter the United States on their U.S. passport.

When travelling between Canada and the United States, you should carry both your U.S. and Canadian passports. This will facilitate your entry into the United States and your return to Canada.

Canadians with dual citizenship from a third country

On January 1, 2026, the specific countries whose nationals are subject to entry limitations in the U.S. were updated per the proclamation “Restricting and Limiting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the Security of the United States”. Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, travelling on a Canadian passport are not subject to these entry limitations. However, if you travel or stay requires a visa, including renewals or extensions, you may face delays caused by new processing procedures.

Useful links

Visas

Canadian visitors can usually stay in the United States for 6 months without a visa. You must declare your intended duration of stay upon entry into the United States.

In most circumstances, Canadian citizens don’t require visitor, business, transit or other visas to enter the United States from Canada but there are some exceptions.

If you do need a visa, be aware that U.S. authorities may periodically review already-issued visas. Visas can be terminated for various reasons, including:

  • violation of admission terms
  • a re-assessment of eligibility, including because of previous criminal convictions or charges

In February 2025, U.S. authorities made changes to some of the instructions on how to fill out visa applications. Follow the current instructions carefully when filling out your application.

Useful links
Canadian permanent residents

Canadian permanent residents may need a non-immigrant visa to enter the United States.

You must obtain this visa from the U.S. authorities before entering the country. You must also have a valid passport from your country of citizenship.

As of January 1, 2026, the U.S. proclamation “Restricting and Limiting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the Security of the United States” is in effect. It may impact your ability to obtain a visa if your country of citizenship is designated in the proclamation.

Useful links
Visa Waiver Program

If you are a citizen of a country that is part of the visa waiver program (VWP), you don’t need a visa to enter the U.S. for stays up to 90 days. Instead, you must obtain pre-travel authorization via the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior your departure.

Useful links

You must also carry proof of Permanent Resident Status in Canada upon re-entry into Canada.

U.S. permanent residents

Canadians who are permanent residents of the United States must present a valid U.S. permanent resident card upon entry.

Permanent resident status in the U.S. can be terminated for certain reasons, including:

  • living outside the U.S. for longer than permitted
  • a re-assessment of eligibility, including because of previous criminal convictions or charges

International travel as a U.S. Permanent Resident – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

First Nations persons and Native Americans born in Canada

You may be able to cross the Canada-U.S. border by land or water with your Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS), also known as a secure status card. However, the acceptance of all status cards is entirely at the discretion of U.S. officials. The secure status card and status card are not accepted travel documents for air travel and cannot be used to cross the Canada-U.S. border by air.

As of February 1, 2019, all new and renewed secure status cards are issued with a machine-readable field to facilitate Canada-U.S. border crossing. When using a status card to cross the Canada-U.S. border, it is strongly recommended to:

  • use a valid machine-readable secure status card, and
  • carry a valid passport

As a person registered under the Indian Act entering the U.S. to live or work, you may be asked to provide documentation to prove the percentage of Indian blood required under U.S. law.

Useful links
Working in the United States

Most Canadian business travellers may apply for admission at a U.S. port of entry without first obtaining a non-immigrant visa. However, travellers entering the United States in certain business-related categories are required to present specific documents to establish eligibility for admission.

If you plan to work in the United States, contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for specific requirements.

Foreign Representatives in Canada

Studying in the United States

Canadian citizens don’t need visas to study or participate in a student exchange program in the United States. However, they need to be registered with SEVIS, a U.S. student tracking system. Students must present their registration form to CBP officers each time they enter the United States.

Useful links

Length of stay

If you wish to stay longer than 6 months, you must apply for an extension at the nearest U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office once you are in the United States and before the expiry of your initial authorized stay. Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate that you are a temporary visitor in the United States.

The U.S. government strictly enforces immigration regulations. Remaining in the United States beyond your authorized period of stay can result in serious consequences such as detention or deportation.

There is no set period that you must wait to re-enter the United States after the end of your authorized stay. However, if a CBP officer suspects you are spending more time in the United States than in Canada, it will be up to you to prove to the officer that you are a temporary visitor, not a U.S. resident.

Extend your stay – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Biometrics

Most ports of entry to the United States use facial recognition technology to verify your identity when entering or departing the country. In addition, digital fingerprints are required for some travellers.

Biometrics – U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Electronic devices

U.S. border agents are entitled to search your electronic devices, such as your phones, computers or tablets, when you are entering the United States. They don’t need to provide a reason when requesting a password to open your device.

If you refuse, they may seize your device. The border agent could also delay your travel or deny entry if you are not a U.S. citizen.

Before crossing the border, put your device in airplane mode to ensure remote files don’t get downloaded accidentally.

Useful links

Preclearance

The preclearance service provides clearance for entry into the United States for persons and their luggage at a Canadian preclearance airport before departure instead of on arrival in the United States.

When using U.S. preclearance facilities at a Canadian airport, you must meet U.S. entry requirements. You will be interviewed by a U.S. preclearance officer. They are authorized to inspect your luggage and can refuse you entry into the United States.

It’s an offence under Canada’s Preclearance Act to knowingly make a false or deceptive statement to a preclearance officer. While you are in a preclearance area, you are subject to Canadian law, including:

  • the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
  • the Canadian Bill of Rights
  • the Canadian Human Rights Act
  • Canada’s Preclearance Act
  • Canadian criminal law

You may withdraw your request to enter the United States and leave the preclearance area at any time unless a U.S. preclearance officer suspects on reasonable grounds that you have made a false or deceptive statement or obstructed an officer. The officer may then detain you for violations of Canadian law.

Preclearance Locations – U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Criminal Record

If you have a criminal record, no matter the severity or the date of the offence, you may be refused entry to the United States. You may also experience problems when travelling through U.S. airport facilities. A pardon for an offence issued by Canadian authorities is not recognized under U.S. law to enter the United States.

If you are ineligible to enter the United States, you may apply directly to U.S. Customs and Border Protection for a temporary waiver of inadmissibility via the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Canadian citizens may also apply at land borders.

U.S. ports of entry are computerized and connected to a centralized database. Information is readily available on criminal convictions in both Canada and the United States. Even though you may have entered the United States without hindrance in the past, you could run into difficulty if your record shows a criminal conviction or a previous denial of entry. Attempting to gain entry without a waiver could result in several weeks of detention and a permanent ban from entering the United States.

Useful links

Cannabis

Previous use of cannabis, or any substance prohibited by U.S. federal laws, could mean that you are denied entry to the U.S. If you attempt to enter the U.S. for reasons related to the cannabis industry, you may be deemed inadmissible.

Boating in U.S. waters

Operators of small pleasure vessels arriving in the United States from a foreign port must report their arrival to U.S. Customs and Border Protection immediately for face-to-face inspection at a designated reporting location.

Some exceptions apply, including under Nexus Marine.

Pleasure Boat Reporting Requirements – U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Cruises

You must have a valid Canadian passport to take a cruise from the United States. Some of the countries you visit will not permit entry without a passport. A passport is also important to re-enter the United States at the end of the cruise.

Ship authorities might retain your passport during the cruise, in accordance with their own administrative regulations and to facilitate clearance with U.S. Immigration.

If your passport is kept:

  • obtain a receipt
  • ensure you recuperate your passport at the end of the cruise
  • always keep a photocopy of your passport with you

Pets

Pets must appear healthy when examined at a port of entry. If there is evidence of poor animal health, your pet may be subject to examination and/or testing at your expense or may be denied entry.

Pets may also need to meet additional requirements, such as having:

  • an import permit
  • an export certificate or health certificate
  • proof of vaccination (for example, rabies vaccination)

Animals may be subject to quarantine requirements.

Canadian citizens under the age of 19 travelling with a school or other organized group under adult supervision must travel with written consent from their own parent/guardian.

Rules depend on your nationality, so we do not guess. Before you book:

  • Read your own government's travel advice first.
  • Official government portal: US ESTA (official, .dhs.gov). Real portals sit on government domains; copycat sites often charge extra.
  • Not sure what your passport needs? Check the visa rules for your nationality (eVisas visa checker) or compare with VisaHQ. These are affiliate links: if you use their application service we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Official government sites are usually cheaper and are linked above where we have them.
  • Check your passport: many countries want it valid for 6 months after arrival and with blank pages.
  • Check for an e-visa, travel authorisation or digital arrival card, and any vaccine rules (yellow fever is the common one).
  • Ask your airline: they can refuse boarding if your documents do not match the rules.
