Planning your trip to Mallorca
Best time to visit
May, June, September and early October bring warm weather and sea swimming without the peak-season crowds. July and August are hot and the busiest months, when popular beaches and coves fill up early in the day. Winter is mild and quiet, well suited to walking and cycling, though many resort hotels and seasonal businesses close.
How many days you need
One to two days covers Palma: La Seu cathedral, the Almudaina Palace, Bellver Castle and the lanes of the old town. Add three to five days for the Serra de Tramuntana mountain villages such as Valldemossa, Deià and Sóller, the coves of the east coast and the headland at Cap de Formentor.
Getting around
Airport buses run to Palma, and a regional bus network links Palma with the main towns and resorts. A historic railway runs from Palma through the mountains to Sóller. A rental car makes remote coves and villages much easier to reach, but mountain roads are narrow and winding and shared with many cyclists, so allow extra time.
What to skip
Some scenic routes, including the road to Cap de Formentor, can have seasonal restrictions on private cars, so check before driving. The best-known coves are packed by late morning in summer; arrive early or look for quieter beaches. Parking in Palma's old town is limited, so leave the car outside the center.
