Best time to visit
April to June and September to October bring warm, sunny weather that suits both the city and the beaches. July and August are hot and humid, with the beaches at their busiest. In mid-March the Fallas festival fills the streets with giant sculptures, fireworks and crowds; it is unforgettable but noisy, and accommodation books up early.
How many days you need
Two to three days covers the old town and cathedral, the Central Market, the City of Arts and Sciences, a walk or ride through the Turia Gardens and time at the city beaches. Add a day for the Albufera lagoon and its rice-growing villages, where paella originated.
Getting around
Valencia is flat and bike-friendly, and the long Turia Gardens park, built in a former riverbed, links much of the city on foot or by bike. The metro connects the airport to the center, and trams and buses reach the beach and port. The historic center is compact and walkable.
What to skip
Some beachfront restaurants aimed at visitors serve paella that is pre-made or reheated; places that cook it to order take longer, which is usually a good sign. During Fallas, expect road closures and very loud firecrackers, and plan accordingly if you are traveling with young children.
