Planning your trip to Berlin
Best time to visit
May to September is the easiest time to visit, with long days, open-air cinemas, beer gardens and lakes on the edge of the city to cool off in. Spring and early autumn are quieter and still pleasant for walking. Winter is cold and grey, but the Christmas markets and the city's museums, galleries and indoor nightlife make it a reasonable off-season break.
How many days you need
Three to four days covers the Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag, Museum Island, the East Side Gallery and Berlin Wall Memorial, and time in neighborhoods like Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg. Add a day for Potsdam and its palaces, which is a short regional train ride away.
Getting around
The U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses cover the whole city and run late, with some lines running all night at weekends. Berlin is spread out, so plan to combine transit with walking rather than walking everywhere. Tickets must be validated before you board; inspectors are plain-clothed and checks are common. Cycling is popular and the city is mostly flat.
What to skip
Checkpoint Charlie itself is a busy reconstruction with costumed photo opportunities; the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse and the nearby museums give a much clearer sense of the divided city. Reichstag dome visits are free but must be booked ahead online, so ignore anyone offering to sell access on the street.
