Best time to visit
April to June and September are the most comfortable months, with mild weather for walking the old center. Summer is busier with festivals and events, and in mid-August in even-numbered years the Grand-Place is covered with the Flower Carpet. Winter is damp and cold, but the Christmas market and lights around the center are a draw in December.
How many days you need
One to two days covers the Grand-Place, the Royal Palace and Mont des Arts, the Magritte and fine arts museums, the comic-strip murals and the Atomium. Brussels also works well as a base: Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp are each an easy day trip by train.

The historic center is compact and walkable, though there are some steep streets between the lower and upper town. Restaurants on the narrow Rue des Bouchers near the Grand-Place are known for aggressive touts and set menus aimed at visitors; walking a few streets further usually gives better value. The Manneken Pis statue is much smaller than most people expect, so treat it as a quick stop rather than a destination.
