Planning your trip to Istanbul

Best time to visit

April to early June and September to November bring mild weather that suits long days of walking. Summer is hot and humid and the main sights are at their busiest. Winter is cold and damp, with occasional snow, but lines are shorter and the city is calmer.

How many days you need

Three to four days covers the historic peninsula (Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, the Grand Bazaar), a Bosphorus ferry ride and time in neighborhoods like Beyoğlu, Karaköy or Kadıköy on the Asian side.

Getting around

A rechargeable transit card covers the metro, trams, buses, funiculars and public ferries. The tram line through the old city links most major sights, and ferries across the Bosphorus are both practical transport and a sightseeing trip in themselves. Traffic is heavy, so rail and water are usually faster than taxis. Dress modestly when visiting mosques, and avoid visiting during prayer times.

What to skip

Be wary of friendly strangers who suggest a bar or a relative's shop, and of shoe-shiners who drop a brush for you to pick up — both are well-known setups. In the Grand Bazaar, haggling is expected; browse several shops before buying and never feel obliged after accepting tea.
