Best time to visit
Málaga has a mild climate year-round, which makes spring and autumn ideal for combining sightseeing and the beach. July and August are hot, and the beaches and coast are at their busiest. Holy Week processions in spring and the summer fair in August are highlights, but expect big crowds and higher accommodation prices.
How many days you need
One to two days covers the Alcazaba fortress, Gibralfaro Castle, the Cathedral, the Picasso Museum, the Roman theater, the central market and time on the city beaches. Add days for Ronda, the Caminito del Rey walkway, the caves and beaches of Nerja, or Granada's Alhambra, which is a longer but very worthwhile day trip.
Getting around
The historic center is compact and largely pedestrian, so it is easy to explore on foot. A suburban train connects the airport with the city center and continues along the coast to towns such as Torremolinos and Fuengirola, and a metro and city buses cover the rest. Buses and trains link Málaga with Ronda, Granada and Seville.
What to skip
Tickets for the Alhambra in Granada often sell out well ahead, so book as early as you can if it is on your plan. The Caminito del Rey also requires a reservation. In summer, avoid long walks around the fortress hills in the midday heat, and bring water.
