Totality changes by seconds over a few kilometres and shrinks towards the edge of the path: choose a viewpoint near the centre line, and check the official path map before you book. The Sun is highest (about 80 degrees) in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, lower (about 38 degrees) in Spain and Morocco.

Close, but not totalpartial eclipse only
These cities see the Sun covered by less than 100%. Even at 99% the sky does not go dark: only totality does, and a partial eclipse always needs eclipse glasses.

Eye safety
- Look at the Sun only through eclipse glasses or handheld viewers certified to ISO 12312-2. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe.
- During the partial phases, before and after totality, you need the glasses the whole time.
- Only when the Sun is completely covered (totality) is it safe to look without protection, and only until the first bright edge returns.
- Never look through a camera, binoculars or telescope without a proper solar filter.

Common questions
- When is the next total solar eclipse?
- The next total solar eclipse is on 2 August 2027. An annular "ring of fire" eclipse on 6 February 2027 comes earlier but is not total. The next total eclipse after 2 August 2027 is on 22 July 2028, greatest over northern Australia.
- Where can I see the 2 August 2027 eclipse as total?
- Totality crosses Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain and Yemen. Of the cities we calculated, Luxor (6 min 25 s), Benghazi (6 min 13 s), Jeddah (6 min 00 s), Sfax (5 min 43 s), Marsa Alam (5 min 32 s), Oran (5 min 11 s).
- How long is totality in Luxor?
- About 6 min 25 s at the city centre (calculated). Totality is longest in southern Egypt, near Luxor, with the Sun 82 degrees high.
- Is it safe to look at the eclipse?
- Only through ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses, except during the few minutes of totality. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe.
Calculated by Voyaggora with the open-source Astronomy Engine library (Don Cross, MIT licence), checked against the global path in the NASA eclipse catalogue by Fred Espenak: NASA/GSFC eclipse site. Greatest eclipse: 10:06 UTC near 25.5°N 33.2°E. City centres at sea level; not an official source. Voyaggora is not an emergency service.
