Official alert levels for volcanoes with a camera here
These lines are copied from the Travel Live alert data (volcano feed read at 2026-11-04 07:34 UTC, Japan feed at 2026-11-04 07:42 UTC) and use the observatories' own words. Volcanoes that are not in this table have no entry in the alert data we hold right now; that is not a statement that they are quiet, so check the observatory.

How to read volcano webcams
- A volcano camera shows what is in front of its lens. Cloud, steam, rain, darkness or distance often hide the crater, so a calm-looking picture does not mean a calm volcano.
- The observatory's alert level and notices govern. The links in the table above and the credits below go to the observatories' own pages.
- Cameras marked "thermal" in their names (Etna - EMCT (thermal) and Stromboli - SPCT (thermal)) are heat cameras: the observatory names them that way, and they show heat rather than ordinary light.
- When this page was built, 29 of the 29 volcano cameras had a file time we could read, and the newest file was between 3 and 1813 minutes old (median 12 minutes).

Quick answers
- Are these volcano webcams live video?
- No, they are still pictures, each one the latest frame the publisher's camera has uploaded. Voyaggora does not copy or store them: your browser loads every picture straight from the publisher, so what you see is what the publisher is serving at that moment.
- How often do the pictures refresh?
- Whenever the publisher's camera uploads a new frame; each publisher sets its own interval and our data does not state a fixed one for most of them. When this page was built, 29 of the 29 cameras had a file time we could read, and the newest file was between 3 and 1813 minutes old (median 12 minutes). For the cameras whose file name carries the time of the picture (Icelandic Meteorological Office, INGV Osservatorio Etneo and Japan Meteorological Agency) that time is printed under the picture. Reload the page to ask for the newest file.
- Why is a picture dark, grey or blurry?
- Most cameras simply record what is in front of them: it is dark at night, fog, cloud, rain or snow can hide the view, and a lens can mist or ice over. At northern latitudes winter days are short, so pictures can be dark for much of the day. A dark picture does not by itself mean the camera is broken.
- Do volcano webcams warn me of an eruption?
- No. They are monitoring cameras and the picture can be hidden by cloud, steam or darkness. Eruption warnings and alert levels come from the volcano observatory and your local authorities.
- Who runs these cameras?
- Public bodies and park or volcano observatories: U.S. Geological Survey, Alaska Volcano Observatory / U.S. Geological Survey, GeoNet / Earth Sciences NZ, Icelandic Meteorological Office, INGV Osservatorio Etneo and Japan Meteorological Agency. Each picture names its publisher and links to the publisher's own page; full credits are at the bottom of this page.
- What are the alert levels in the table?
- They are the observatories' own alert systems, copied as written: New Zealand's GeoNet levels, the US Geological Survey alert levels with aviation colour codes, and the Japan Meteorological Agency levels. Each system has its own scale, so levels from different countries are not comparable.
