How to read this page

What to check before you travel on a public holiday

Quick answers

Which countries have a public holiday today?
On this page's date: Dominica, Northern Mariana Islands, Russia. The page uses the UTC date, Wednesday 4 November 2026, and shows the local time in each country so you can see whether its holiday has started.
Will banks and shops be closed on a public holiday?
Often, but it depends on the country and the holiday. Banks, government offices and many shops may be closed, and public transport can run on a Sunday-style timetable. Tourist sites, restaurants and hotels are frequently open, sometimes with changed hours. Check the place you plan to visit directly.
Why does a country show a holiday as "expected, can differ by a day"?
Some holidays follow the lunar or Islamic calendar. The exact day is set by a moon sighting or an official announcement shortly before, so the calculated date can be one day off. The official calendar of that country decides.
Are regional holidays included?
No. Only nationwide public holidays are listed. Many countries also have state, provincial or cantonal holidays (for example in Germany, Switzerland, Spain and the United States) that apply only in part of the country.
Why does the page show a different date for some countries?
When it is already the next day in places such as New Zealand, Japan or Australia, or still the previous day in the Americas, the calendar date differs from the UTC date. The table shows the local time in each country so you can see if its holiday is on now, still to come or over.
Where does the data come from?
OpenHolidays API (ODbL licence) for 36 European, African and American countries, and the open-source python-holidays library (MIT) for the rest. Neither is an official government feed; use each country's official calendar for anything important.

Sources: OpenHolidays API (ODbL) (courtesy of the OpenHolidays project), the nationwide public holidays of 36 countries, data under the Open Database Licence; python-holidays (MIT) (MIT licence), computed for 206 further countries and territories.
