Model wave height at guide-city coastsModel estimate
The field is NOAA GFS-Wave, global, 0.25 degree, parameters HTSGW (significant height of combined wind waves and swell) and PERPW (primary wave mean period). Units are the units written in the GRIB message: m for height and s for period. The run is 2026-11-03 00Z and the forecast step is 7 hours, so the valid time is 3 Nov 2026, 07:00 UTC. GRIB validityDate/validityTime on the height message: 20261103 0700. Each city is matched to the nearest sea cell whose value is not the GRIB missing value, and only if that cell is within 40 km. The distance column is that separation. Inland cities with no sea cell that close are left out.

How to read this
Significant wave height is a model statistic of the combined sea, not the height of a single wave a person would see, and not a buoy measurement. The primary period is the model’s period at the same kind of cell. A longer period with a given height is a different sea state from a shorter period; this page does not turn that pair into a surf grade or a warning.
The cell can sit up to 40 km from the city coordinate, offshore of a point that may be a harbour, a cliff, or a beach. It is not a forecast for a named break.
NOAA publishes a new GFS-Wave run four times a day. This page uses one step from the newest run whose index file answered, chosen so the valid time is close to the read. It is not a live buoy.
Nothing here is a safety signal. Rip currents, local bans and lifeguard flags are not in this file. The number is the model field at one sea cell.
Quick answers
- Where does this model put the largest waves near a guide city?
- Maui, United States: significant height 2.34 m, primary period 14.0 s, sea cell 26 km from the guide coordinate, valid 3 Nov 2026, 07:00 UTC.
- Is this a measurement?
- No. It is the NOAA GFS-Wave model field HTSGW and PERPW. A buoy can read something else. The page labels every figure as a model estimate.
- Why is my city missing?
- Because no sea cell within 40 km of its guide coordinate had a non-missing wave height in this field. Lakes and inland water are not added by hand.
- What does the period mean?
- PERPW is the primary wave mean period in the GRIB message, in s. It is printed beside the height from the neighbouring sea cell. It is not a statement about whether the surf is good.
- How old is the model run?
- The run used here is 2026-11-03 00Z, step 7, valid 3 Nov 2026, 07:00 UTC. The page was read at 3 Nov 2026, 07:15 UTC.
- Does a high number mean stay out of the water?
- This page does not say that. The National Weather Service disclaimer says the user assumes the risk of using the information, and this table is a model field, not a warning.
